Tanganyika Wildlife Park

Volunteer at TWP

Tanganyika Wildlife Park needs your help.

Volunteers are a crucial element for Tanganyika. Our volunteers help out in numerous areas around the Park, and many events and programs offered by Tanganyika would not be possible without volunteer help. Volunteers, in turn, are able to give back to the community and have a truly unique volunteer experience. Tanganyika currently offers several different volunteer opportunities. If you have any questions about volunteering at Tanganyika, don't hesitate to contact the Education Department by emailing edu@twpark.com or calling 316-794-8954 ext 102.

Docent Program

Short-term volunteers age 14 and up may have the opportunity to join the Docent Program. Tanganyika's Docent Program is invitation only and is a year-round program. Docents help out with a variety of activities around the Park including hangling many of the education animals, leading Guided Tours, assisting with education classes and programs, helping with special events, assisting at Interactive Exhibits, and helping out with special projects.

Docents are able to set their own schedules by signing up for programs and activities that suit their interests and availability. Volunteers are, however, requested to commit to at least 40 hours of service per year.

A 4-week training course is required, and meets one evening per week. Training classes generally begin in February, April, June, August, and September, though exact dates may vary.

Animal Interaction Program

Tanganyika's Animal Interaction Program is open to volunteers age 16 and up and is a seasonal program. Participants are welcome volunteer over multiple seasons, but service hours are only available between March and November. Program participants are requested to volunteer at least 4 shifts per month. Morning and afternoon shifts are available, and participants will be scheduled based on their availability.

A 1-hour training seminar is required, and Program participants will be trained at each exhibit individually. Please contact the Education Department at edu@twpark.com for training seminar dates and times.
